The Importance of Group Cohesion

Having been in the workforce for quite a while now, and having worked with colleagues both younger and older than myself, I have to say that one thing I see lacking in younger employees, and even at times with my young adult students, is the ability and even willingness to become part of a "team". I am presuming that this stems from the "Me" generation, who has been taught to always look out for themselves first and foremost above everyone else, and to ensure that their own needs are being met prior to meeting the needs of others or even the business that employs them. Unfortunately though, their inability to focus on goals beyond those that serve themselves, is a huge negative in the workplace.

I came across an article by Clinical Psychology Associates which talks about the importance of group cohesion in the workplace and offers some simple ideas on how to better promote cohesion amongst employees. In the PIDP 3250 course, we discussed these Stages of Team Development with regards to group work, but I think these stages apply to any group that one finds themselves in, whether it be in a work environment, classroom, or even social group.

The better one understands the dynamics of these stages, and understands how to best manage themselves and others, the better the final outcomes will be with the final result being a well-rounded, settled, and cohesive group of individuals all striving towards the same goals.

I fell into teaching over 22 years ago and haven't looked back. Although I had never planned on getting into this profession, I discovered that I loved it and have never felt that I was teaching. Opening the world of possibilities to my students, and giving them support to be able to reach out far to achieve their goals, is where my passion in teaching lies.
